Green Guerrillas

Grow It

Green Guerillas, an organization founded by Liz Christy that popularized guerilla gardening and established the Bowery-Houston Community Farm Garden in 1973 (now the Liz Christy Community Garden). Today, Green Guerillas supports community gardens across the five boroughs. They use a mix of education, organizing and advocacy to help people cultivate community gardens, sustain grassroots groups, grow food, engage youth, and address issues critical to the future of food justice and urban agriculture.

Growing Together

The Green Guerrillas asked us to grow the plants of The Three Sisters. The Three Sisters are represented by corn, beans, and squash and they’re an important facet of Indigenous culture and food ways. They’re planted in a symbiotic triad where beans are planted at the base of the corn stalks. The stalks offer climbing bean vines support as they reach for sunlight from the earth.
