Many hands, hearts and capital have contributed to stewarding these gardens. Please enjoy a brief Timeline of the land at 1653 N Robertson St:
2007 - donated by Nagin administration to NHS with the requirement that NHS had to develop within 270 days (which they did not)
2007-2008 – Through a 501(c)3 called The Porch Cultural Organization, the University of Kansas Architecture school added a shed and shade structure costing ~$53,000
2009 – The organization facilitating these improvements, The Porch, placed the property in the care of Emily Posner and the property’ next door neighbor, jackie sumell
2010 – Stewarded by Emily Posner who fundraised $3,000 for and completed Poison ivy remediation
2011 – Emily and jackie crowdsourced and completed fire remediation after N. Claiborne fires, $2,500
2015 – The first Solitary Garden was built for Albert Woodfox, cost $5,000
2018 – Another caretaker of the property, Kelsey Reynolds, received an Antenna Platforms grant and ran “A Garden to Dye For” for children in the neighborhood $6,000
2020-2022 – Through the funding of Kaepernick Publishing, added more garden infrastructure, pond, fence, new gate to open the Abolitionist Sanctuary $18,000
2007-2022 – Labor, maintenance and water estimates $54,500
